Doug Basler is a small business owner in Kent WA. He has overcome many obstacles in his life that are the root of his passion to represent the hard working people and families of District 9 and is on a mission to revitalize the federal government so that all of our residents can experience the best life possible. Born and raised in Washington State, Doug has been married to the love of his life, Lori, for over 30 years and has five fantastic children. His two oldest daughters graduated from UW, his son works in the technology industry and his two youngest daughters attend middle school and high school in Kent. Doug graduated from Central Valley High School in Spokane Valley after a tumultuous childhood. He experienced the trauma of being raised by a single mother and eventually landed in a mixed family with his father, a Teamster’s Union truck driver for Burlington Northern railroad. From an early age Doug was industrious. At the age of 12 he sold newspaper subscriptions and actually held down 3 jobs simultaneously during high school. After graduation he worked in food service, construction, factory work and as a professional musician. Doug is passionate about his community and has been a volunteer youth leader for over 30 years, as well as working with the homeless and underprivileged. Doug is a strong advocate for education reform, family values and creating good paying jobs.
The strongest economy the world has ever seen was created by freedom, innovation and private enterprise. The greatest lifter of citizens out of poverty into financial independence and secure retirement has been home ownership. The foreclosure crisis has dashed the hopes of countless families in Washington and across the nation. I will work to end non-judicial foreclosure and to once again make home ownership affordable, safe and common. Reinvigorating the economy will require a fresh approach that limits government regulation and excessive job killing taxation, plus incentivizing domestic businesses so that they will once again choose America first for manufacturing.
I am committed to responsible environmental protection while maintaining economic development and private property rights. The United States has long been the world leader in conservation, protection and management of the environment, all while protecting private ownership of property and maintaining a vibrant economy. The fact is that if the U.S. stopped using all fossil fuels, the global reduction of carbon emissions would be negligible. International cooperation must be an integral component in environmental protection.
The role of government in society is to insure that all people are treated fairly and equitably and to protect our God given rights. It is improper for elected officials and government agencies to play favorites by picking winners and losers based on income, social status or worse, political contributions. The U. S. Government must act to guarantee a fair and level playing field for our families, businesses, and communities.
We have all seen the benefit of the free market in energy with the dramatic decrease in gas prices. The free market, and public demand, will continue to fuel traditional and emerging energy technologies. I will continue encouraging innovation and balanced regulation that will keep America moving, strong and prosperous.
